In the present study, the hydrodynamic performance of a semicircular free surface breakwater (SCB) has been investigated through a systematic experimental programme. This is mainly due to the fact that in the DTB case a significant part of the incident wave energy penetrates the first barrier and interacts with the second barrier. This is not the case for the DFB (Koutandos, 2007) where maximum velocities appear in the region of the first barrier and velocities in the second barrier are much lower.
(c) The energy dissipation in this specific breakwater configuration can be attributed to three mechanisms according to the region that the dissipation occurs: (i) in the region of the first barrier, in form of vortices oscillating around the submerged edge of the structure (ii) in the region between the two barriers due to wave breaking resulting from the interaction of various waves propagating in opposite directions and (iii) in the region of the second barrier, in form of vortices oscillating around the submerged edge of the structure (d) Maximum velocities (1.3-1.6 m/s) are observed in the region of the first and the second barrier and mainly in the seaward side of the structures where the main structure-interaction takes place and intense vortices are observed. Detailed computed velocities and turbulence kinetic energy in the vicinity of the two structures indicate the effects of the breakwater on the flow pattern and the turbulence structure. The experimental water surface elevation compared satisfactorily with the computed results. The effects of relative width (structure length/wave length) and the relative distance (distance between two barriers/wave length) on the hydrodynamic characteristics (wave transmission, reflection, dissipation, velocity, turbulence kinetic energy) were investigated. The experimental results were compared with numerical results obtained with the use of the Cobras model for the regular waves case. The large-scale laboratory experiments concerning the interaction of regular and irregular waves with the breakwater were conducted in the Canal d'Investigació i Experimentadó Marítima flume of maritime engineering laboratory at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona.
